Transfer Windows from one disk to another disk
Without having an installation DVD, I want to transfer Windows 8.1 to the newly bought hard disk for upgrade. Who can show me the easiest and safest way? Thanks in advance.
Have you ever had such a need? Actually, under lots of situations you may need to transfer Windows from one disk to another disk apart from the above one. For example, the disk coming with computer is running in low disk space; want to run Windows on solid state drive for faster speed; replace the old disk since it might have errors. But how to do the migration?
If you want to migrate Windows from one HDD to another HDD, please take the following steps:
Step 1: Prepare System Migration Software
Since Windows itself does not provide programs to migrate system but apps for system backup and restore, users need to download a third party system migration software from the internet. Here we suggest using MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition, because this program can help transfer Windows from one disk to another disk without users costing any money. However, if you are running a server operating system, Partition Wizard Server Edition is required. After successful installation, we can run this program to start migration.
Step 2: Migrate Windows by Following Instructions
Launch the system migration software and we can see its main interface shown below:
To start transferring, please choose the function “Migrate OS to SSD/HD Wizard” from the left action panel.
Then, just select the new disk to transfer Windows to and click “Next” to continue.
Tip: transferring Windows 7 to new disk will migrate both system partition and boot partition of Windows 7 (sometimes they are in one partition) to the new hard disk, and MiniTool Partition Wizard gives chance to edit these 2 partitions.
Here, we are able to edit partition size by changing the length of partition handle and edit partition location by changing the position of the partition handle for the new disk. Then, click “Next” to get a boot note.
If you are running Windows on an MBR disk, please set boot priority in BIOS as the note tells when the computer is booting. If you are running Windows 7 on GPT disk, ignore the note and click “Finish” to go back to the main interface:
At this time, as long as we click “Apply” button, all changes will be performed automatically. Note: migrating system requires restart, which is to protect system. Please restart your computer as MiniTool Partition Wizard prompts.
Now, to transfer Windows from one HDD to another HDD has been completed. However, if you are going to migrate Windows to SSD, an extra step is needed: visit your manufacturer’s website to see whether they provide a disk migration software.
As far as I know, Samsung offers such a tool, which is called Samsung Data Migration. If you are going to transfer system to Samsung SSD, lucky enough. Just download this tool and try migrating by following instructions. However, if you encounter some problems during this process, for example, the migration process freezes suddenly (similar problems are commonly seen in technical forums), you also need the help of third party system migration software, like MiniTool Partition Wizard.
Finally, hope this post is useful for you.
